Dear Anne, as principal investigator of the ITREMA project, you have enabled important scientific and clinical progress in the field of HIV treatment monitoring here in South Africa. ITREMA consisted of an open label randomized clinical trial and several observational studies investigating a novel method of HIV treatment monitoring using objective adherence tests. These research studies were all performed locally in South Africa and together showed that affordable and easy to use assays are able to distinguish between HIV treatment failure due to drug resistance and failure due to non-adherence. ITREMA was not just a scientific project. It involved laboratory capacity building, training as well as knowledge transfer between partner institutions in the Netherlands and in South Africa. Through multiple training and education activities, the scientific results of ITREMA continued to affect practice in South Africa today. This short video is a testimonial to all the work that you have done and its relevance to people in South Africa. Many people wish to thank you for your immense contributions to science and HIV medicine and some will get a chance to do so in this video. So let me kick off with these words of thanks as your most grateful student and colleague. You took me under your wing while I was still in medical school and enabled me to move to South Africa from where I worked with you on ITREMA In doing so, you allow me to grow and explore science, clinical medicine, and the world. Thank you. Hi, I am the senior scientist at Ndlovu Research Centre. ITREMA project has played a very big role in our current lab capacity and infrastructure. including chemistry, endocrinology, tumor markers and HIV treatment monitoring. which we still work with today on some very exciting projects. We are very grateful to have been part of the ITREMA project. Thank you. I was trained by Lucas himself and then I trained the others. It was my first time working on a study and I have learned a lot. I have learned a lot from the study about all the adherence and drug resistance tests. I am still continuing monitoring the patients with HIV and AIDS about adherence and drug resistance tests. Dear Anne, it is through your innovative thinking and academic wisdom that ITREMA was developed. You found Lucas Hermans as a PhD candidate who you sent abroad to Ndhlovu Medical Centre to Ndlovu Care Group in South Africa to set up this program. He did a splendid job operationally, academically, technically and managerial. But it was under your guidance that ITREMA grew from an idea into a massive program with a lot of consequences and I think we all can be proud on the result. It is ZonMw who granted us the opportunity and they had the trust in us to start and finance this project. But it is your innovative thinking. It is your academic knowledge. It is your background. And together as a team, we made a major success out of ITREMA. We all think that blood level testing as a mean to measure adherence and to do that cost effective will change WHO guidelines, national guidelines. It has been a fantastic project. We are proud of you and we would like to continue to work together.
