With the start-up scheme from the Employment Insurance Agency UWV, you just might be able to do that.


Stay with me as I walk you through the steps you need to take.


So let's get started with step one: Prepare.


Ask permission from the UWV. To start a business with unemployment benefit, you need permission from the UWV.


Your business must be able to make enough money for example.


UWV helps you to start your business with the start-up scheme.


Use the research period.


Your employment advisor can grant you a six-week research period.
During this period, you keep your benefit and you do not have to apply for jobs.


During the research period, you can develop your idea.
Write a business plan, for example.  Or calculate the expected turnover.


Find a suitable location, arrange for permits and insurance.

There are three ways to start a business on unemployment benefit.
With a six-month start-up period, without a start-up period with hours discount or without unemployment benefit.


If you were previously employed by the government or as a teacher UWV can request advice from your former employer.


You need this advice to qualify for a research or start-up period.


Proceed to step two: Register.


Register with KVK.
If you decide to start your own business after the research period you must register with the KVK Business Register.


And choose a suitable legal structure, such as eenmanszaak or bv.
KVK will pass on your details to the Tax Administration.


They will send you your VAT number and VAT ID.


Now, let's go to the next step: Consider rules and regulations.


Report your income.


You must report your income to the Tax Administration and to UWV.


If you receive an entrepreneur allowance you must also report the number of hours spent on your business.


UWV compares the income statements, so make sure they match up. If they don't, this may have financial consequences.


You may have to repay any benefit you received or pay taxes.


Now, let's go to the last step: Arrange safeguards.


Take out disability insurance.


As a self-employed professional, you are not automatically insured against income loss due to illness or incapacity to work.


You would do well to take out disability insurance.


During the six-months startup period, you are fully insured.
