This animated video explains how you can apply price indexation as an entrepreneur in the Netherlands. The animation has a voice-over. VOICE-OVER: "John runs a painting and maintenance business. His operating costs are rocketing. His employees’ wages are going up, and materials are growing ever more expensive. He wants to adjust his prices. He decides to look up the price changes in his materials. He starts with paint. John finds the online price index of Statistics Netherlands, CBS. A price index shows the changes in the price of a product or service over a certain period. John types cbs.nl/discover-statline into his web browser and chooses Prices in the menu. He decides to use the Producer Price Index, the PPI. It shows the development of product prices. He uses the filter ‘paints, varnishes and similar’, and sets the correct period. John’s most recent price adjustment was in January 2022. The price index for paint was at 116.49 then. In January 2023, the price index is at 132. John calculates that he can increase the price of paint by 12.9 per cent. He follows the same procedure to calculate the price development for the other materials. John adjusts his prices. He tells his clients when the new prices will take effect. And that he has used a price index. Has he already agreed upon a price with a client? In that case, he may only adjust the price if his general terms and conditions state that he may do so. Want to know more? Find all the information on business.gov.nl. Information for entrepreneurs."
